How We Define Civil Rights
Civil rights are the conditions under which a person exercises sovereign authorship over their own life: the right to exist without permission, whether that permission is demanded expressly or constructed through circumstance; to associate or withhold association by choice, free from reprisal or governmental consequence; to participate in civic and economic life on terms no legitimate government could have lawfully withheld; and to resist any concentration of power that reduces a person from agent to subject. These rights are not granted by government. They preexist it, and are the source from which government derives whatever authority it legitimately holds. Government's only legitimate role is to refrain from their violation and to prevent others from doing the same.
